Every homeschool parent asks it eventually, usually at 9 p.m., staring at a curriculum scope-and-sequence chart like it’s a verdict: Is my child behind?

It’s the wrong question. Not because your worry isn’t real — it is, and it deserves better than a pep talk. It’s the wrong question because "behind" only means something if there’s an agreed finish line everyone’s racing toward. There isn’t one.

Behind compared to what?

On a recent homeschool podcast conversation about math anxiety, host Trish Corlew and CTCMath’s Nadim al Rahim landed on exactly this: "behind" is always relative. Behind a public school timeline? Behind another homeschool family down the street? Pick a comparison and you can make almost any child look "behind" at almost any moment. Pick a different one and the same child looks ahead.

The question isn’t really about your child. It’s about which yardstick you picked up without noticing.

What to ask instead

At Auxesis, we didn’t invent this reframe — we just built a system around it, because a reframe without a system just turns into a nicer way to worry. The system is Mastery Gates: instead of "is my child on pace," ask "has my child actually mastered this concept." Three conditions, and none of them care what grade it is:

  1. Explain it — can your child explain the idea in their own words, not just get the right answer?
  2. Apply it — can they use it in a new problem, not just the one they just practiced?
  3. Sustain it — do they still have it two weeks later, without a refresher?

A child who hits all three on fractions during what would be their 5th grade year, on material that "belongs" in 4th, isn’t behind. They’re mastered — on a different calendar than the one printed on a textbook cover.

A concrete example

Say two kids are both working on multi-digit multiplication. One finishes the unit in three weeks flat and moves on — but six weeks later can’t tell you why "carry the one" works, just that it does. The other spends five weeks on the same unit: builds it with base-ten blocks first, draws it as a bar model next, then finally writes it as a standard algorithm — and six weeks later can still explain why it works.

Which one is behind?

By the calendar, the first. By mastery — the only measure that actually predicts whether this holds up into algebra, into real life — the second is in far better shape. That’s the logic behind Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract: it looks slower because it is slower, and that’s the point. Speed and mastery aren’t the same axis.

The part that’s actually hard

None of this means never checking where your child stands. In that same podcast conversation, Trish Corlew admitted math has always felt like a foreign language to her — and that’s genuinely okay. Getting real support, in whatever form fits your family, isn’t giving up on your kid. It’s the opposite.

And if you’re the parent lying awake over this, you’re not alone in that either — "am I doing enough" is common enough in homeschool circles that whole communities exist just to talk parents down from it. That anxiety deserves to be taken seriously on its own terms, separate from whatever your child’s actual math level is.

One homeschool blogger put the mindset shift plainly, after years of watching her own kids move at different paces across different subjects: it’s not about catching up. It’s about building up. You’re not chasing a finish line someone else drew. You’re building something that has to hold weight later.

Where to start

Trade "is my child behind" for a better question: Has my child actually mastered the last thing we covered — can they explain it, apply it, and still have it in two weeks? If yes, keep moving, at whatever pace that takes. If no, that’s not falling behind. That’s information about where to spend your next lesson.
