Type “Socratic method” into a search bar right now and half the results are about ancient Athens, and the other half are AI startups using it as a marketing word. That’s not an accident — but it does mean the term has gotten fuzzy right when it matters most. If you’re trying to figure out whether an AI tool (or your own teaching) is actually using it, or just borrowing the name, here’s the plain version.

What it actually is

The Socratic method comes from how Plato wrote his teacher, Socrates, arguing with people in ancient Athens. Socrates almost never told anyone the answer to anything. Instead, he asked a question, let the other person answer, then asked another question that exposed a gap or a contradiction in that answer — not to embarrass them, but to get them to notice the gap themselves.

Strip away the toga and the 2,400 years, and the mechanism is simple: you learn more from finding your own mistake than from being told you made one. A person who’s handed the right answer remembers the answer. A person who’s asked the right question remembers how they got there — which is the part that actually transfers to the next problem.

What it looks like at home, not in a lecture hall

Say your child is stuck on a word problem: Maria has 3/4 of a pizza and gives away 1/3 of what she has. The non-Socratic move is to solve it for her, or to explain the steps and have her copy them. The Socratic move is smaller and slower: What does “3/4 of a pizza” actually look like? What does “1/3 of what she has” mean — a third of the whole pizza, or a third of her 3/4? Maybe a quick sketch would help — want to try one?

Nobody hands over the answer. Your child does the reasoning; you just keep asking the question that points at the next gap. It’s slower than telling her the answer, and that’s the point — the slowness is where the actual understanding gets built, not lost.

Why “AI tutor” and “Socratic” get paired so often right now

Almost every AI tutoring product built in the last two years claims some version of “Socratic” in its pitch — guided questions instead of instant answers, a patient tutor that never just gives it away. It’s a good instinct. It’s also, in practice, mostly not what’s happening.

We wrote about this directly when two of the best-funded AI tutors quietly stumbled within the same year — Khanmigo on adoption, Quizlet’s Q-Chat on the business model underneath it. Both were built around a chat window: ask a leading question, get a response, keep going. That works for a single nudge. It doesn’t work for what Socratic teaching actually requires, which is watching a student’s confusion in real time and deciding whether they need a physical object in their hands, a picture on paper, or one more question before the idea clicks — not just a friendlier rephrase of the same prompt. A chat interface can ask a good question once. It can’t reliably tell the difference between a kid who’s genuinely stuck and a kid who’s about to just guess to make the questions stop.

The actual test

You don’t need to be a philosopher to check whether a tool — or a moment at your kitchen table — is doing this for real. Two questions do most of the work:

  • Does it change what it asks based on where your child actually got stuck, or does it just rephrase the same question in a friendlier tone?
  • Is your child doing productive struggle, or just frustration? We wrote about this distinction in more detail here — productive struggle is effortful but moving; frustration is when a kid has stopped reasoning and started guessing. If your child answers three questions in a row with “I don’t know,” that’s the signal to back up a step, not push harder. Real Socratic teaching adjusts. A tool — or a parent — that keeps asking the same question in a nicer voice isn’t doing it, no matter what the label says.

Knowing what the method is supposed to look like is the easy half. Actually running it in real time — mid-homework, with a tired kid, on a problem you might not remember how to do yourself — is the part that takes practice.
