Self-Assessment: Four Facilitation Competencies

CompetencyDevelopingPractitionerProficient
Practitioner Stage HabitsStill explaining before asking; filling silence automaticallyAsks before telling in most moments; holds 10 sec silenceThree commitments automatic under live pressure
Question VocabularyPrimarily uses one question type; mostly entry questionsUses all four types; some intentional sequencingSequences fluidly within sessions; adapts to student state
Coach Stage ReadingMisreads student states regularly; intervenes in productive struggleIdentifies states correctly most of the time; coach moves emergingState reading accurate; all three coach moves deployed appropriately
COMPASS IntegrationReads briefs but doesn’t adapt to them; post-session notes sparseBrief informs session preparation; notes capture surprisesFull loop operating: Brief → Session → Note → Informed next session

Evidence Portfolio

Submit five pieces of evidence demonstrating competency at the Proficient level across all four dimensions:

  1. A session recording (audio) with your self-annotation — timestamps marking each question type and coach move used
  2. Three Mastery Log entries from three different students demonstrating the Explain–Apply–Sustain standard
  3. Five post-session COMPASS notes that include all three required elements
  4. A written reflection on your 30-day implementation sprint — what changed, what didn’t, and why
  5. One Facilitation Brief with your written response plan and post-session comparison (brief vs. what actually happened)

Sprint Retrospective

Look back at the 30-day sprint that produced your evidence portfolio and answer honestly:

  • Which competency moved the most? What drove the improvement?
  • Which competency moved least — and what was in the way?
  • What’s the one thing you’d change about how you approached the sprint?
  • What does your practice look like now that it didn’t look like 30 days ago?

Readiness Verdict

✓ Ready for Module 4

All four competencies at Proficient. Evidence portfolio complete. Sprint retrospective demonstrates self-awareness about what drove growth.

⟳ One More Sprint

One or two competencies at Practitioner. Evidence is present but incomplete. The sprint produced growth — one more cycle will consolidate it.

Reflection

Take a moment before moving on. These questions are where the lesson becomes personal.

Question 1

What’s the hardest part of this self-assessment for you to be honest about — and why?

Question 2

What evidence surprised you most — either positive or negative?

Question 3

If you ran the 30-day sprint again with what you know now, what would you do in week 1 that you didn’t?
