The Singapore Stack: Metacognition

The Three Metacognitive Processes

Metacognition — thinking about one’s own thinking — is the central pillar of the Singapore Math framework. It is not a supplemental skill; it is the capacity that makes all other skills self-correcting.

M

Monitor — Awareness of current thinking. Am I understanding this? Is my approach working? Where am I stuck?

R

Regulate — Adjusting thinking in response to monitoring. If the current approach isn’t working, what should change?

E

Evaluate — Assessing quality of thinking and outcome. Did my approach work? Does my answer make sense? What would I do differently?

Five Educator Prompts

These prompts are designed to externalize the metacognitive processes students need to develop internally.

  1. “What are you thinking right now?” — Monitor. Brings internal process to the surface without evaluating it.
  2. “Is your current approach working?” — Monitor → Regulate. Forces the student to assess before you do.
  3. “What could you try instead?” — Regulate. Opens the strategy space without providing the strategy.
  4. “Does your answer make sense? How do you know?” — Evaluate. The “how do you know” is essential — feeling right is not the same as being right.
  5. “What did you learn from this problem?” — Evaluate at the learning level, not just the solution level.

The Stuck Protocol

Being stuck is not a failure state — it is the precondition for thinking. The Stuck Protocol gives students a structured response to the experience of not knowing.

Stop → Name → Navigate

Stop: Pause what you’re doing. Don’t spiral or guess randomly.

Name: Say specifically what you’re stuck on. “I don’t know how to start” is less useful than “I understand the problem but I can’t figure out what kind of bar model to use.”

Navigate: Choose a next move: re-read the problem, draw something, try a simpler version, ask what you know for sure.

Teaching the Stuck Protocol explicitly reduces the emotional charge of being stuck. Students who have a script for stuckness are less likely to shut down.

Integration with the Full Framework

Metacognition is the center of the Singapore Stack pentagon because it activates and regulates everything else.
