How to know when a student has truly mastered a concept — and what to do when they haven’t.

The Three Mastery Conditions
In Singapore Math, mastery is not a score or a completed workbook page. It is a functional standard: can the student use this concept when they need to, in conditions they haven’t practiced before?
Explain — In their own words, without prompting. The ability to explain a concept is stronger evidence of understanding than the ability to execute a procedure.
Apply — To a new, unfamiliar problem. Familiar problems can be solved by pattern-matching without understanding. Novel problems require genuine comprehension.
Sustain — Retrieved and used correctly one week later, without re-teaching. If it disappears, it was memorized, not mastered.
The Mastery Log
The Mastery Log tracks the three conditions per concept. It is a simple grid — concept on the left, three columns (E / A / S) on the right. Fill in each column as the student demonstrates that condition.
Why the Log Matters
The discipline of tracking forces you to notice. When you are not explicitly checking for Explain and Sustain — only observing Apply during sessions — you will consistently overestimate mastery. The log creates a record of what you actually know about what the student knows.
Update it within 24 hours of each session. Memory of what the student demonstrated fades faster than you expect.
The Weekly Check-In Protocol
Once per week, do a low-stakes 5-minute retrieval check on recently “mastered” concepts. The check does not need to be formal.
- One or two problems from 1–2 weeks ago — not reviewed in between
- No warning given — retrieval without preparation is stronger than cued recall
- No re-teaching during the check — just note what holds and what doesn’t
- Update the Mastery Log’s Sustain column based on what you see
Four Intervention Patterns
Concrete Gap
The student cannot demonstrate with objects. Abstract and pictorial work was built on an unstable foundation. Return to concrete before anything else.
Transfer Gap
The student can explain and apply familiar problems but fails novel ones. Expand the problem set — vary format, context, and number magnitude.
Retention Gap
Mastery was present but disappeared by the weekly check. Increase retrieval frequency for that concept to 2–3 times per week.
Prerequisite Gap
The concept doesn’t stick because something underneath it is shaky. Identify the prerequisite and re-establish it before returning to the target concept.
The Re-teaching Trap
When a concept doesn’t stick, the instinct is to reteach it the same way, more slowly. This almost never works. The four intervention patterns above are more productive because they identify why it isn’t sticking — not just repeat the explanation that didn’t land the first time.
Reflection
Take a moment before moving on. These questions are where the lesson becomes personal.
