The Singapore Stack: Pólya’s 4 Steps

Why problem-solving is the point of Singapore Math — and how Pólya’s framework structures every session.

Why Problem-Solving Is the Point

In Singapore Math, problem-solving is not a section of the curriculum. It is the curriculum. Every concept is introduced through a problem, and every skill is developed in service of solving problems. This is the opposite of the “learn the skill, then apply it to problems” model most Western curricula use.

The Implication for Instruction

If a student can compute but cannot problem-solve, Singapore Math regards this as partial learning, not success. The target is the problem-solver, not the calculator.

Pólya’s Four Steps

George Pólya’s framework from How to Solve It (1945) provides the structural backbone for Singapore Math problem-solving instruction.

  1. Understand the Problem — What is known? What is unknown? What is the condition? Can you draw a picture or diagram? Students often rush this step. Force them to slow down here.
  2. Devise a Plan — What strategy fits this problem? Draw a bar model, work backwards, look for a pattern, simplify. The plan comes before any calculation.
  3. Execute the Plan — Carry out the strategy. This is where computation happens — but only after steps 1 and 2 are complete.
  4. Look Back — Does the answer make sense? Can you verify it a different way? What did you learn from this problem that applies elsewhere?

The Step Students Skip

“Look Back” is almost universally skipped when students are left to their own devices. It is the step that converts a completed problem into a learning experience. Without it, each problem is an isolated event. With it, patterns emerge and transfer becomes possible.

The four steps map directly onto the CPA framework:

Common Intervention Points

Student jumps to computation

Return to Step 1. “Before you calculate anything — what does the problem actually ask for? Can you draw it?”

Student’s plan doesn’t fit the problem

Don’t correct the plan — ask them to check it against Step 1. “Does your plan answer what the problem asked?”

Student skips Look Back

Make it non-negotiable. Require a written sentence: “My answer makes sense because…”

Student is stuck at Devise

Ask: “Have you seen a problem with a similar structure? What did you draw for that one?”

Take a moment before moving on. These questions are where the lesson becomes personal.
